Deputies Make First Save Using New Project Lifesaver Program

A five-year-old girl with Down syndrome is safe today thanks to the York County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver Program. On April 17, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., deputies got a call about a Project Lifesaver client who had wandered from her home on Dayton Rd. in Rock Hill. Upon receiving the call, Sgt. Gilbert and Deputy Osborne swiftly responded and initiated the search using our handheld Project Lifesaver receivers. After a strong signal was heard, the deputies split up to triangulate the signal. Within a few minutes, Deputy Osborne located the client in a car two streets over from her home. The child had been in the vehicle for approximately 20 minutes and could not figure out how to get out. The total search time was an impressive 7 minutes. Project Lifesaver is a rapid response initiative that utilizes radio frequency tracking technology to locate at-risk individuals with cognitive impairments who may wander away from their caregivers and become lost. Additional information about Project Lifesaver and how to donate to the program can be found on the York County Sheriff’s Office website.
