The president of Winthrop University says the school is going through a new marketing effort using an outside party to put together a long-term plan.

Dan Mahony says Winthrop is a much better fit for some students than USC or Clemson.

“When you go to the big institutions you don’t get that smaller college feel.  You don’t get that attention sometimes from the faculty and staff that you do at a place like Winthrop.  For students who want that type of experience, we’re a better fit and we just need to articulate that’s what you get that’s different here.”

Mahony says Winthrop needs to focus on making itself more affordable.

“We need to focus on ways we can reduce it (the cost).  Some of that is raising money for scholarships, and some of it is finding different ways of being creative to help students be able to afford their education.”

Mahony says he’d like to increase enrollment at Winthrop from 6,000 or 7,000 to 7,500.
