South Carolina’s unemployment rate reached a 15-year record low in June, but the news was not as good in the tri-county area.

State Department of Employment and Workforce figures show that York County’s jobless rate rose from 4.5% to 5.3% in June.

Lancaster County’s rate jumped from 5.3% in May to 6% in June, while Chester County’s rate increased from 7.1% to 7.9% last month.

A spokesman with the DEW says the state’s rate is seasonally adjusted, while the county rates are not.

Governor Nikki Haley issued a statement thanking employers, employees and Team South Carolina for being able to celebrate the 15-year record low.

Haley says the announcement is all the motivation the state needs to stay focused on things like workforce training, tax relief and investments in our students.
