Lancaster Deputy earns national award after surviving gunshot wound

A Lancaster County Deputy who survived a gunshot wound late last year was the first recipient of a national award of officers who survive life-threatening incidents.

Undercover Drug Task Force Deputy Brandon Rollins took a bullet in the stomach from 19-year-old Rodrick Caskey while Rollins was intervening in an armed robbery at the Shrimp Boat seafood restaurant back in November.

On April 17, he was named as the first recipient of the “Not Today” award from the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association.

Just a few weeks before the November shooting, Rollins had attended a “Not Today” class that trains officers how to mentally train themselves to calm down and deal with their wounds.

“We are very proud of Brandon and how he has been able to overcome this incident,” Sheriff Barry Faile said. “We are proud of his accomplishments and excited that he has been able to turn this into a positive experience that others can learn from.”

In a release, Rollins says he pans to bring what he learned at the association’s conference back to Lancaster County.
