York Place set to open new learning center

Troubled and abused teens at the a community counseling center at York are now reciving daily classroom instructon at the center’s campus.

The facility known as York Place serves abused and neglected children, and the center’s new CEO Marco Tomat says the new classroom initiatives are a new venture in the 160-year-old facility.

The home is backed by the Episcopal Church, and Tomat, who took over as CEO following the retirement of longtime director John Shiflet says teachers from the York School district are teaching up to 300 children a year — but only 36 at a time.

Tomat says the new classrooms occupy nearly 4-thousand square feet and feature promethian boards that allow teachers to cater their instruction to students of differing backgrounds and differente age and ability levels.
