Tuesday afternoon, York County’s election commission officially certified a petition for Sunday beer and alcohol retail sales in York County.

Chet Miller of Rock Hill, who’s one of several organizers said over 8-thousand signatures were gathered in favor of the petition.

Miller says the bottom line is that York County merchants lose out on business that heads straight up Interstate 77.

Miller, who does not drink, said over 8-thousand signatures have been collected across York County, surpassing the 75-hundred signature requirement.

In 2006, voters in Rock Hill approved the sale of beer and wine in restaurants and two years later, voters in York County and Tega Cay approved a similar measure.

The measure is likely to be criticized by members of the faith community, who’ve said in the past that Sunday should be reserved for religious purposes.
