Melvin Poole, President of the Rock Hill Chapter of the NAACP,  joins Palmetto Mornings to talk about the upcoming Emancipation Program.

EVENT DETAILS

The Annual Emancipation Program sponsored by the Rock Hill Branch NAACP will be held on January 2, 2012 at St. Matthews AME Zion Church on Lige Street in Rock Hill.  The speaker for the occasion is Rev. Ina Culp Harris, the pastor of Chestnut Grove AME Zion Church in Chester.   The program is held annually at a local church usually at high noon on New Year’s Day.  It is being held on January 2 in 2012 because the 1st is on Sunday.

The program is a commemoration of a celebration that took place on January 1, 1863 in response to the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln declaring that, on January 1, 1863, all persons held as slaves within a State shall be forever free.  On this day in 1863 abolitionists both black and white gathered in churches in the Free states to await the news that Lincoln has signed the final document.

The program is open to the public.
