The South Carolina Republican Party will provide only the 20-thousand-dollar-per-candidate filing fee toward the cost of running next month’s first-in-the-South GOP presidential primary, changing a pledge it made before four counties sued over funding.

State Republican Party executive director Matt Moore informed the state Election Commission Monday that the party won’t provide any more money toward the high-profile contest that is six weeks away.

That’s because of the state Supreme Court’s November 22nd ruling on a lawsuit filed by four counties.  How the primary will be funded was unclear Monday evening.  The state GOP’s response means it will contribute 180-thousand dollars to the January 21st primary, down from a previous assumption of more than 800-thousand dollars.

That leaves an 830-thousand dollar gap between the amount allocated for the primary and its estimated cost.
