Business Rock Hill: 12/28/11 The Year in Business
On this week’s Business Rock Hill, a look back at the year in business. In January, York Technical College and Rock-Hill based Revenflo web marketing opened a joint facility downtown called the Hive, to give students the ability to work on cooperative and independent web design projects…
Also in January, Supermetal Structures set up its first US Plant in Rock Hill, adding 125 new jobs and a 6.6-million dollar investment.
In February, the Democratic National Committee announced the September 2012 convention would be held in Charlotte…opening the doors wide open for Rock Hill to gain some of the business. Some 40-thousand dignitaries, politicians and the media will spend several days in the Carolinas.
In March, the first steps for the downtown East Project were laid out… The joint effort between the City of Rock Hill and Comporium Communications will revamp the city’s municipal parking lot into a park and spark new development along the east side of Main Street… And heading a few blocks down the street, change was finally seen at the former site of the Rock Hill printing and finishing plant as portions of the near hundred-year-old facility were torn down.
In May, Rock Hill-based Williams and Fudge Corporation announced aggressive growth plans, and company officials said they’re occupying additional space in the White Street Cotton Factory. The company now employs over 250 full-time employees. The company also marked it’s 25th anniversary two months later.
In June, Rock Hill-based Red Line also celebrated its 25th anniversary. Red line is a chemical company specializing in producing batch processing and custom blends of various chemical compounds.
In August, the York County’s one-cent sales tax referendum passed by an overwhelming 82% of voters in favor of the program…an effort literally paving the way for future growth and development.
In September, the US Youth Soccer Association announced it was bringing some 10-thousand people to Rock Hill next summer for the association’s national championships. Add to that the ongoing construction of the Riverwalk and Velodrome, and Rock Hill is making it’s mark as an amateur sports destination.
In October, York county Natural Gas opened its new customer service center and compressed natural gas filling station on East Main Street, while JC Penny Announced its expansion at the Galleria Mall on Dave Lyle Blvd.
In November, the dirt started to move at the Warren Norman Company’s site next to Lowe’s on Dave Lyle Blvd. Sporting goods retailer Academy Sports and More…as well as a very well-known warehouse retailer, who’s yet to be named, are slated to occupy that property.
And in December, the York County Regional Chamber kicked off its annual buy local campaign, encouraging shoppers to shop for goods in York County first. Three local residents won major prizes from the program’s sponsors.
All in all, a good year in Business.
