Twenty-five communities in South Carolina have been awarded grants to assist in a variety of projects.

The South Carolina Department of Commerce announced Friday that over $5.7 million has been awarded in Community Development Block Grants to 25 communities from across the state.

Several communities will use the funds for downtown or neighborhood revitalization, as well as planning activities to make them safer and more attractive to residents and businesses.

Some communities will benefit from the grant money through enhanced fire protection and access to health care. Others will use the funds to expand or renovate local libraries. Monies are also being used for the demolition of vacant and dilapidated buildings in some communities, in order to eliminate blighted structures which are seen as obstacles to economic competitiveness.

Grant recipients were selected through a statewide competitive process in which local governments submitted grant applications to the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

The department says these projects will directly benefit more than 67,000 residents in South Carolina.
