The state tree given and decorated by Columbia Garden Club and Garden Club of South Carolina.

It’s the Carolighting ceremony that almost didn’t happen. But thanks to the efforts of the Columbia Mayor and Representatives Rick Quinn, Kenny Bingham and James Smith, the longstanding State Capitol Carolighting Christmas tree ceremony will go on.

The annual State Capitol Carolighting Christmas tree lighting ceremony will take place at the State Capitol Sunday evening beginning 6 p.m. Governor Mark Sanford and Columbia Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin will be there to help with the traditional start to the holiday season. The 44th annual ceremony will feature school students, singers from churches and USC singers. The event will also feature live entertainment by Angel Morey of America’s Got Talent, The United States Army 282nd Brass Band Quintet and the Benedict College Gospel Choir.

The state tree is a 34-foot white fir Christmas tree which was given and decorated by the women of the Columbia Garden Club and the Garden Club of South Carolina. The event will be broadcast statewide live on SC ETV.
