SLED is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Summerville that has nearby residents in an uproar. Around 3:15 Sunday morning a Summerville police officer attempted to pull over Nelson Gray Hyman at a traffic stop. Apparently, Hyman refused to pull over and tried to run the officer over with the vehicle Hyman was driving. Authorities say that’s when the officer began firing shots and hit Hyman in the upper torso. After being shot, Hyman’s vehicle crashed into a truck in the neighborhood.

This neighbor spoke with WCIV in Charleston: “That car could have been in my home and hurt my children and thank God it happened in the middle of the night and not while they were out riding their bicycles.”

Neighbors say the shooting could have been prevented and there were other ways the officer could have handled Hyman.

Hyman died on the scene. The officer is on investigative leave while the incident is being looked at by SLED.
