SC student shoots officer, arraignment Friday

Deputy 15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson in Horry County says a 14-year-old Socastee High School student was arrested Tuesday for shooting an officer.

He brought a gun to school and actually assaulted a SRO, or school police officer there. He’s not injured, but it appears that was his intent.

Richardson says although he is aware of what actually happened, he cannot give details to the incident and if the student intended to shoot the officer or a student. He did give the juvenile’s charges though:

One of those charges will be attempted murder. The other charge that we are pretty sure of is going to be possession, manufacturing transportation or possession with intent to distribute destructive devices or components, which would deal with explosive devices.

Richardson says they are also looking at charges for weapons of mass destruction, after several destructive devices were found in the school and the student’s home. As found on the student’s Twitter account:

“It was basically saying: ‘Now’s the time.’ He made some reference to having some couple of handmade bombs on that account,” says Richardson.

The student, according to Richardson, will be arraigned Friday. Again, the officer shot was not injured. The investigation continues.
