In the wake of Friday’s deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn., area school leaders are weighing in on the topic of school safety and what can additionally be done to protect children while on school grounds.

Fort Mill School Superintendent Chuck Epps tells WRHI in recent years, disaster plans have also included active shooter training.

Each winter, the York County Sheriff’s Office conducts active shooter training in abandoned factories in Fort Mill — much like what may have taken place Friday morning.

Epps says the topic of School Resource Officers is also up for additional discussion.

The Fort Mill times reports that three years ago, the Town of Fort Mill and the Fort Mill School District opened up a partnership to help share the cost of School Resource Officers in area schools after nearly a decade of the district footing the entire bill for the officers’ salaries.
