Two York County charities have earned their list on Secretary of State Mark Hammond’s annual Angels and Scrooges list.
The list, based on information charities submit to Hammond’s office each year, recognizes charities whose budgets send the highest percentage of contributions to the intended purpose, while at the same time alerts prospective donors to the list of which charities put the lowest percentage of contributions towards the cause.
In York County, the Early Learning Partnership was named one of Hammond’s top Angels charities, with 81.4% of contributions being passsed on to the recipient. While at the same time, Fraternal Order of Police York County Lodge #15 based in Rock Hill, made the Scrooge list with only 9.2% of gross receipts going towards the cause.
Three Fraternal Order of Police organizations made the Scrooges list. Hammond says many of the “Scrooges” are law enforcement organizations — because many of those organizations give their fundraisers large commissions.
Hammond offers some advice on what to do when a new charity contacts you.
