Lancaster man arrested in stabbing death of great-grandmother
Authorities have arrested a Lancaster man in the apparent stabbing death of his great-grandmother this weekend.
Sunday night, Lancaster County deputies were called to the home of Verdie Mackie after a family member found her dead inside her home. Investigators later named Mackey’s great-grandson, 28-year-old William Richard Greene as a suspect, and he was arrested a short time later.
In a release from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies identified money as the motive for the stabbing.
“We are shocked and saddened by the brutality of this crime,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. “Our condolences go to Mrs. Mackey’s family. We are however thankful that we could bring this investigation to a close so quickly and get Greene in jail where he belongs.”
Greene faces murder and weapons charges and remains in custody at the Lancaster County Detention Center.
