York Counties oldest homicide case is closed. A man who had been in jail nearly 7 years, after a York County woman was fatally stabbed has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaugter. Steven Tyler Benfield, aged 42 was sentenced to 15 years in Prison after a plea. He was charged in the 2015 death of Jessica Pittman Stewart. The trial was scheduled for today but Benfield pleaded guilty before it began. The woman was found dead on Benfields property west of Clover in the summer of 2015. The court case against Benfield was the oldest pending homicide case in York County where a defendant was awaiting trial. From Benfield firing multiple lawyers to a DNA witness and sheriff deputies dying, to Covid, there were many reasons for holdups and delays of a trial.
