A Charleston bicyclist was killed Tuesday after being hit by a car and tossed over a bridge. Mitchell Hollon, 54, was knocked off the James Island Connector bridge in Charleston after an AT&T van wrecked on the bridge.

A witness told police the van drifted onto the shoulder, striking Hollon. The report then says he fell about four stories into the marsh. The Charleston County Rescue Squad found the bicyclist about an hour later, 40 feet below the marsh.

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office report said Hollon died from blunt-force trauma. However, it was not immediately clear if those injuries were due to the collision or the fall from the bridge.

The van’s driver was identified as Charleston native Gregory Rupley.
