Threat to solicitor results in 46-month sentence
The man who threatened the life of the Spartanburg solicitor faced federal sentencing today. Jermaine Nelson of Pelzer was sentenced in federal court in Anderson, for mailing threatening communications while he was at the McCormick Correctional Institute.
Court records show that the 23-year-old wrote and mailed a letter to Spartanburg Solicitor Trey Gowdy in October of 2009. The letter addressed containing numerous overt threats including, “…your life is very limited…I sentence you to death…Jermaine Nelson will be the one to destroy you completely…you will die soon…you will be murdered…”
Nelson’s finger prints were found on the letter and records from McCormick Correctional Institute revealed that Nelson purchased postage on the day the letter was sent. Nelson has two prior convictions for violent felonies.
Senior United States District Judge G. Ross Anderson, Jr. of Anderson sentenced Nelson to 46 months imprisonment.
