York County Council decided Monday to postpone reassessment of properties within the council until 2011. County Manager Jim Baker said the reassessment would raise taxes on nearly 80 percent of homes, with about half rising by 15 percent or more. State Law requires counties to reassess properties every five years, but allows local governments to delay the process by a year if it’s in the interest of the taxpayers.
The ABC News Magazine 20/20 will take an in-depth look into a unsolved York County murder. The episode, airing Friday, will investigate the death eight years ago of Melissa Huntley Motz. Motz death was first ruled a suicide after her body was found in her vehicle with a gunshot wound in 2001, but the York County Coroner at the time changed his ruling to undetermined. More »
After more than 12 hours of budget debate, Democrats late last night launched into a proposal that would suspend all tax credits for one year, until the Tax Realignment Commission(TRAC) can submit a complete report. House Republicans now agree with Democrats that TRAC should also review Act 388, which in 2006 shifted the state’s revenue base from owner-occupied housing to sales tax. More »

Winthrop officials now know the extent of the damage from a fire two weeks ago in the newly-constructed Owens Hall. Winthrop will need at least three million dollars to restore the building and another 1.5 million to stabilize and clean up the area around Owens and Bancroft Halls. More »
