ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop senior guard Nych Smith has been voted to the Big South All-Conference Second Team while senior guard Bjorn Broman has been named to the All-Academic Team.

Smith became the 27th different player in program history to be named all-conference after he averaged 16.9 ppg overall and 17.6 ppg in league play. His scoring average ranks 6th in the Big South while he’s also ranked 4th in assist/turnover ratio, 5th in assists per game, and 6th in field goal percentage.

Over the course of 27 games played, Smith finished with 23 games in double figures and scored 20 or more points on nine occasions. He posted a career-high 35 points on the road at Presbyterian College on Jan. 26, which is the 4th most points in program history by an Eagle in a conference road game. Not only does Smith lead the team in scoring but also assists with 100 (3.7 per game). Winthrop was 10-3 in games that Smith led the team in assists. In seven conference road games he started three of them and led the team with 19.9 ppg, shooting 50 percent from the floor. The 17.6 ppg in conference play is tied for the 7th best scoring average in program history with Xavier Cooks (2017-18).

Broman earned Big South All-Academic Team honors. Broman finished his undergraduate degree in exercise science during his junior year and will graduate with a master’s in sports administration. He is a three-time Big South Scholar and a 2017-18 All-Big South Honorable Mention selection. Broman is fourth on the team in scoring at 10.6 ppg and averaged 11 ppg during league play. When his career comes to an end he’ll be one of the three-point threats in program history as he’s currently 6th with 219 and just 18 points away from 1,000 career points.
