Despite Pickett’s Career-High 21, Eagles Fall To Liberty

ROCK HILL, SC–  Adam Pickett scored a career-high 21 points, but the Eagles suffered a 73-70 loss to Liberty, Tuesday evening at the Winthrop Coliseum. The loss is the third in a row for the Eagles as they are now 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the league while Liberty improves to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big South.

  • Caleb Homesley (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals)
  • Isaiah Williams (10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal)


  • The Eagles raced out to a 14-2 start over the first five and a half minutes connecting six of their first eight shots
  • Adam Pickett scored five of the first seven points and scored three more during the run as he completed his second three-point play in the early going
  • Winthrop held Liberty to just 1-for-9 shooting in that stretch
  • The Flames responded with an 8-0 run before Josh Ferguson ended it with a basket inside
  • Liberty turned it into a 13-2 run to pull within one at 16-15 with 8:57
  • The run was highlighted by two triples from Lovell Cabbil and two buckets inside from Isaiah Williams
  • Two free throws by Myo Baxter-Bell with 7:59 left tied the game at 17-17
  • Eagles answered with a 9-2 run behind threes from Bjorn and Anders Broman
  • Winthrop shot 48 percent from the floor (3-for-9 from three) to lead 33-28 at the break
  • Liberty’s Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz hit three free throws with 1.4 seconds left to make it a four-point game at the break as the Flames shot 31 percent (8-of-10 at the foul line)


  • Liberty opened the second half with six straight points to grab its first lead of the game at 35-33 on a three-pointer from Williams
  • Winthrop responded with six straight points for a 39-35 lead
  • But a 9-0 run pushed the Flames into a five-point lead at 44-39 with 14:20 as Cabbil hit one three and Caleb Honesley connected on two
  • After Xavier Cooks ended the run with a basket inside, Liberty reeled off five straight points capped off by a Ryan Kemrite three for a 49-41 lead with 13:10
  • That forced Winthrop to call a timeout and out of the break Kyle Zunic buried a corner three followed by an Adam Pickett triple from nearly the same spot to make it a two-point game
  • Josh Ferguson blocked a shot that led to a basket inside by Pickett to tie the game at 49-49 with 11:09 to play, forcing Liberty to call timeout
  • Winthrop didn’t let up pushing the run to 12-0 as Ferguson scored two baskets inside with the last one being a dunk, forcing Liberty to call another timeout as Winthrop led 53-49 with 10:06 to play
  • Pacheco-Ortiz ended the run with an elbow jumper, but Cooks answered right back by knocking down a jumper
  • Homesley made it a one-point game with a three-point play but Pickett responded with his own three-point play to put the Eagles back on top by four point at 58-54 with 7:11 left
  • Winthrop led 65-63 with 3:19 left when the Liberty bench was whistled for a technical foul after the Eagles got a defensive stop
  • Anders Broman stepped up and made both free throws for a 67-63 lead
  • Anders Broman then drilled a three on the ensuing possession only to be match by Pacheco-Ortiz on the other end
  • Williams boarded a Cabbil miss and was fouled on the stick back as he knocked down two free throws for a 71-70 lead
  • Pickett drove the lane looking for the lead but his shot was off the mark as Kemrite went down and connected on two free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining for a 73-70
  • Anders Broman‘s full court pass found Bjorn Broman on the wing and his three to tie the game just hit off the iron and out


  • Winthrop shot 49 percent for the game and held Liberty to 38 percent shooting
  • Liberty won the rebound battle with a 38-27 advantage and had 13 second chance points to just three for the Eagles
  • Winthrop had just two offensive rebounds while Liberty had 14
  • Liberty was 11-for-30 behind the arc in the game and 8-for-17 in the second half
  • The Flames scored the final 10 points of the game over the final 2:56
  • Josh Ferguson was the fourth Eagle in double-figures as he 12 points as well as seven rebounds, one assist, two blocks and one steal
  • Xavier Cooks finished with 15 points despite leaving the game and not returning in the final 12:34


  • Winthrop had won 13 straight at the Winthrop Coliseum against Liberty, which dates back to the 2004-05 season
  • Cooks is now 13 points shy of 1,500 in his career (1,497)
  • Bjorn Broman has scored in double-figures in four straight games and five of the last six
  • In the last three games, Bjorn Broman is 15-for-23 from three and 18-for-29 from the floor
  • In just 15 games Bjorn Broman is five triples shy of his career record for threes in a season
  • In addition to his career-high in points, Pickett also set career-highs in rebounds, assists and blocks
  • Pickett has also scored in double-figures in four straight games

The Eagles will head to North Charleston, SC on Friday, Jan. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. contest with Charleston Southern.
