Integral Member of Catawba Indian Nation Passes Away

John George, who was an integral part of the Catawba Indian Nation’s cultural and political renaissance died this past Monday at the age of 71. George, was a U.S. Navy veteran, and the first modern tribal medicine man for the Catawbas.

He was named official medicine man after tribal recognition in 1993, following a land settlement with the South Carolina and federal governments, according to  Elizabeth Harris, spokesperson for the tribe.
