Winthrop Men’s Soccer Defeats USC Upstate 4-0

ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop scored three second half goals and cruised to a 4-0 win over USC Upstate, Wednesday evening in men’s soccer non-conference action.

Game Recap

  • First half was wide open at times with each team pushing forward with speed and creating a couple of opportunities
  • In the 40th minute Jaedon Williams took a corner and as the ball was played back to him wide he hit a shot toward goal that Kenneth Perkinson tipped off the crossbar and
  • Just over three minutes later the Eagles opened the scoring as Rasmus Arousell headed a free ball in the box for his second on the year
  • The second goal came off some creative work on the ball by Nil Vinyals as he took his defender 1v1 and beat him to the end line where he slipped a pass back to Max Hasenstab, who struck a shot first time into the upper right portion of the goal
  • The Eagles continued to pressure as Jogvan Jacobsen helped create the third goal when he stepped up and won a ball in the midfield
  • Jacobsen played the ball wide to Hasenstab, which quickly delivered a cross to the back post where Leif Estevez ripped a shot from about seven yards out into the upper portion of the net
  • The best chance for the Spartans came in the 79th minute when Cam Philpot struck a shot headed to the top left portion of the goal, but Perkinson made a diving save
  • The rebound off the shot from Philpot came right back out in front of the goal mouth as Hamilton Gmah ran on and tried to head the ball into the open goal, but Perkinson was up on his feet quickly and tipped the header over the bar
  • Arousell made it 4-0 in the 85th minute when Joey Soeder slipped a pass to him at the top of the box straight on from goal and he curled a shot into the right side of the goal

Notables

  • The Eagles have now won four straight games at home
  • Winthrop has recorded a shutout in three shutout during the home win streak
  • This was the first time the Eagles scored three goals in a half as they did so in the second half vs. Liberty on Sept. 24, 2016
  • This was Arousell’s second multi-goal game as an Eagle as he scored two against Jacksonville last season
