ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women’s soccer team netted two first-half goals Sunday evening to down the USC Upstate Spartans 2-1 at Eagle Field.
Winthrop has now strung together two straight victories and moves to 3-2-1 on the season while USC Upstate falls to 2-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Allie Thomas got the Eagles on the board in the 18th minute on an assist from Courtney McLeod. From a free kick, McLeod lofted a ball into the penalty area. An Upstate defender misplayed the ball off of her head and Thomas took advantage, heading the ball past the keeper.
Winthrop went up two goals in the 25th minute on an impressive strike from Gabi Hull. Hull collected the ball near the corner of the 18 and fired a rising shot towards the far post that beat the outstretched arm of the goalie, into the top corner.
Upstate pulled one back in the 32nd minute as Isabella Burns lofted a ball towards goal that was able to beat Winthrop goalie Kelly Horan over top as it found the side netting.
STATS OF NOTE
Winthrop finished with 16 shots to eight for Upstate. In addition to her assist, McLeod fired four shots with two going on frame in 83 minutes. Hull finished with three shots while Thomas and Izzy Barton each had two. Horan finished the night with three saves.
NEXT TIME OUT
Winthrop has a short trip up I-77 for its next contest at Davidson. The Eagles and Wildcats battle Thursday at 7 p.m. The Eagles return home on Sunday at 1 p.m. against USC Beaufort.
