WINSTON-SALEM, NC–The Winthrop men’s tennis season came to an end on Thursday as the No. 5 seeded Eagles fell 4-1 to No. 1 Presbyterian College in the semifinals of the Big South Conference Championships being held at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

Winthrop closed the season with a 8-13 record while PC advances to Friday’s championship match with a 17-10 record.  Winthrop was hoping to turn around a 5-2 loss to the Blue Hose just 10 days ago, but the Eagles were no match for PC.

PC breezed through the doubles, winning all two matches and leading in the third when the point was decided. Winthrop’s No. 1 player Diego Quiroz gave the Eagles some hope when he defeated Alexander Lykou in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to even the match at 1-1.

Winthrop lost three straight matches at the No. 3, 6 and 5 positions to hand PC the victory.  Josh Ryan battled Jaime Lopez at No. 6 before falling in a first set tiebraker 7-6 (8-6) and 6-1.  Leandro Papayiannis and Aditya Gokhale lost in straight sets at the No. 3 and 5 positions.
