ROCK HILL, SC–-The 54th ranked Winthrop women’s tennis team continued its winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Southern Mississippi on Thursday afternoon at Memorial Courts.
With the victory, the Eagles are now 12-3 on the season while Southern Miss falls to 8-7.
Winthrop dropped the doubles match as USM claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The No. 2 duo of senior Caitlin Cridland and freshman Alisa Soloveva won their match with a 6-4 win over Elena Roca and Rikeetha Pereira.
The Eagles claimed five of the six singles matches. Sophomore Lauren Proctor defeated Carolin Drescher in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-3, at No. 1. At the No. 2 position, Soloveva knocked off Alex Kitchen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and Cridland took care of Pereira at No. 3 in a tight battle, 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Megan Kauffman went three sets to defeat Tzu-Hui Chen, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4 as did freshman Alya Mourad who won at No. 6 over Roca, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6.
Winthrop’s only singles loss came at the No. 5 spot where freshman Aida Kelic fell to Tjasa Jerse, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Winthrop’s next match will be on Sunday, Mar. 19, when the Eagles face North Carolina State at 5 p.m. in Raleigh.
