ROCK HILL, SC— Winthrop softball opened up its league schedule by completing a three-game sweep of Presbyterian College with wins of 9-1 and 7-3, Sunday afternoon at Terry Field.
The Eagles even their record to 14-14 and are 3-0 in the Big South for the first time since 2009. Presbyterian College falls to 11-18 overall and 0-3 in the league. Winthrop remains in league play for its next contest when it heads to Boiling Springs, NC Thursday afternoon for a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m.
“It’s good to get a conference sweep at home of course,” said Winthrop co-head coach Mark Cooke. “I thought our pitching was really good this weekend, especially Kiley (Majette) and Keleigh (Romine). We had different hitters in each game that came through and did good things for us. I’m real proud of the way we hit the ball, ran the bases and proud of the defense. But what we did best is we put runners on base and drove them in today.”
Freshman Ashley Westbrooks was 2-for-4 with two home runs to help the Eagles clinch the sweep in the final game of the weekend. She hammered a three-run homer in the third inning and then hit a solo shot in the sixth. It was her first mutli-home run game of her career.
Leading 1-0 after two innings, Maddie Antone made it 2-0 with an RBI through the hole at first before Westbrooks stepped in and homered to center. PC got one back in the fourth as Megan Anderson hit a solo home run to left and another in the sixth on an RBI ground out by Presley Bissett.
In the bottom of the sixth Winthrop added two more insurance runs as Westbrooks and Leah Young went back-to-back with home runs to center field.
Majette tossed 3.2 innings of relief in the second game to improve to 6-7 overall as she allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts. On the weekend she finished 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA and had 10 strikeouts and no walks in 11 innings of relief. Romine started the game as she tossed 3.1 innings allowing one run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. She finished with 11 strikeouts in 8.1 innings on the weekend.
The day started with the resumption of game two that was suspended by rain on Saturday. The Eagles led 2-1 to start the day in the fourth inning and added two more runs right away for a 4-1 lead. Morgan Lowers made it a 3-1 game with an RBI triple followed by a Paige Haley ground out to short that brought Lowers across the plate.
Winthrop added four more runs in the 5th inning, with all the action happened with two outs. Blake Wallert delivered a two-run, pinch-hit single to right center, followed by a single up the middle by Lowers that plated two more runs. The Eagles ended the game in the sixth inning with the run rule as Westbrooks singled up the middle, scoring Shayna Covington.
Majette tossed 5.1 innings of relief to earn the win after allowing just one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. Alex Cook took the loss for the Blue Hose after allowing nine runs on 12 hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
In the three games the Eagles scored 22 runs, with 13 RBI coming with two outs and the team was 10-for-21 with runners in scoring position.
