ELON, NC – Ellie Marindin scored her first two collegiate goals Wednesday but the Winthrop lacrosse team fell 13-5 on the road to the Elon Phoenix in the team’s season opener.
Winthrop will host its home opener on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Siena at Eagle Field. Elon improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Phoenix got on the board quickly, only 35 seconds into the contest, and went up 2-0 on a man-up goal just over six minutes into the game. Winthrop scored its lone goal of the first half on a free-position opportunity from the crosse of freshman Ellie Marindin with 22:47 remaining in the half.
Elon was able to grab two more goals, going up 4-1 with 19:41 on the clock. Winthrop was then able to shut down the Phoenix offensively for the next 10 minutes before Elon scored four times in the last 9:45 to go take an 8-1 lead into the break.
Winthrop was much more successful on both ends of the field in the second half, limiting Elon to only five goals while scoring four of its own.
The Phoenix grabbed the first three goals of the second half, going up 11-1 before junior Kristen Shriver grabbed a goal on a feed from Katie Clark. After Elon went back up 12-2, Marindin scored her second goal of the contest unassisted. Elon scored gain with just over nine minutes remaining but the Eagles were able to score the last two goals of the game, one from junior Nicole Beatson, her first goal as an Eagle and the last by junior Katherine Judge.
Marinidin’s two goals came on her only two shots of the game. Shriver led the Eagles with three shots. Madison Cassidy led Winthrop with four ground balls while Beatson corralled three draw controls. Freshman Chloe Wormsley recorded seven saves on the evening.
