SPARTANBURG, SC—The Winthrop Eagles’ relied on a strong pitching performance to defeat the Wofford Terriers 4-3 in an in-state non-conference matchup at the Russell C. King Field Wednesday night.

With the victory, Winthrop is now 19-19 on the season, while Wofford falls to 21-18.

The Eagles grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the top of the 2ndJace Whitleybegan the rally with a double to left field.  The following at bat Babe Thomas was hit by a pitch.  On a wild pitch, Thomas advanced to third and Whitley was sent home for the first run of the game.  Kyle Edwardslater doubled to left center field scoring Thomas.  Tyler Asbill followed with a double of his own scoring Edwards.

In the top of the 4th Edwards laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Thomas, who had previously reached on a fielder’s choice, for the 4-0 lead.

Wofford cut into the Eagles’ lead when Cody Miller hit a two run homer in the bottom of the 4th.

The Terriers continued to chip away at the Winthrop lead when Wofford added another run in the bottom of the 5th on a fielder’s choice.

The Eagles’ starter Reece Green had a solid outing for Winthrop pitching 5.0 innings while only allowing three earned runs and fanned four batters along the way.  Green picked up the victory on the night and is now sdfjlksd on the season with a 5.19 ERA.

Thomas Williams turned in a strong relief appearance from the bullpen for Winthrop.  Williams shut out Wofford and held them hitless through his 4.0 innings pitched to pick up his first save of the season.

Winthrop will return to Big South action when the Eagles travel to Asheville, NC for a three-game weekend series against UNC Asheville.  Game 1 is scheduled for Friday, April 22 beginning at 6:00 pm at Greenwood Field.
