3 Busy SC Highways Have Pavement Problems
Sections of three busy interstate highways in South Carolina will need repaving after officials discovered problems with the roadbed beneath Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County last year. Published reports say the state Department of Transportation disclosed the new pavement problems in a response this week to a Legislative Audit Council audit. The audit noted that DOT terminated a $44 million contract to resurface 10 miles of Interstate 85 last year when a contractor discovered the underlying pavement had failed. The contractor who was given $6 million for the work started and the project was redesigned and rebid.
The DOT audit response notes similar roadbed problems have since been found on another I-85 section in Spartanburg County, on I-385 in Greenville County and on I-26 in Laurens County.
