A federal judge is holding a hearing today on the status of the trial of Dylann Roof who faces dozens of federal charges in the slaying of nine parishioners at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church. Setting the trial date is expected to be one of the issues discussed today in federal court in Charleston. In October, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel agreed to delay the trial until at least next month to give the defense and federal prosecutors more time to prepare. Since then, the prosecutor who is bringing state charges, which include nine counts of murder, has written Gergel saying she would like to prosecute the state case first. That trial is set for next July. For the moment, Federal prosecutors have not announced yet whether they will seek the death penalty against Roof.
