knights-stadiumIn a roundabout way, the Charlotte Knights may have just made their largest financial contribution to York County in years.

The land which once held the team’s old stadium — Knights Castle in Fort Mill — was just sold by York County to the Cato Corporation for $833,542.

The deal included the demolition of the stadium off Interstate 77 as the Charlotte-based retailer plans to turn it into a mixed-use development.

Proceeds from the land sale have now been set aside for the York County Economic Development Board following the May 18 county council meeting. Council member’s signed off on the request that would still require spending from that account to be approved by the elected body.

“To have the funds and the dedicated support of the leadership is critical to what we do,” York County economic development director David Swenson said.

Swenson told council members a portion of the Knights Castle funds might be spent on a future comprehensive study on available land for economic development projects as well as a speculative, or “spec,” building built as a shell for future businesses eyeing York County.
