ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop Eagles’ men’s tennis team faced the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops Monday afternoon and came out victorious winning 5-2.

The Eagles came out strong in doubles play taking the doubles point and early lead. The No. 1 combo of Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak took down Robert Kjellberg and Sebastian Sikh in impressive fashion 8-1. The No. 2 pairing of Steven Patrick and Tremayne Mitchell bested the Battling Bishops’ duo of Fernando Nardelli and Eduardo Ugalde 8-1. Doubles competition was finished by the Eagles’ No. 3 twosome of Ruben Franzanti and Michael Chen dropping their match 8-5 to Andres Gomez and Fabio Pereira.

Winthrop kept the momentum going winning the first four singles matches clinching the match. No. 1 Mitchell downed Kjellberg in a three set battle 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. No. 2 Comerford dominated his match only dropping one game in defeating Sikh 6-1, 6-0. No. 3 Patrick also won in straight sets over Pereira 6-1, 7-5. No. 4 Chen topped Nardelli 6-2, 6-2. North Carolina Wesleyan finished the singles competition by winning the No. 5 and No. 6 positions with Gomez over Nagovnak 7-6, 7-6 and Ugalde over Ryan 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Winthrop, 5-3, will return to the court this Friday, Mar. 6 when they travel to Johnson City, TN to face the East Tennessee State Bucs at 10:00 am.
