Hasenstab, Sole Lead Eagles To 3-1 Road Win At Campbell Saturday Evening
BUIES CREEK, NC— Winthrop scored two first half goals and held on a for a 3-1 victory over Campbell as it ended a two-game losing streak, Saturday evening in Big South Conference men’s soccer action.
Winthrop improved to 11-4-1 on the year and 5-2-1 in the league while Campbell dropped to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the Big South. Winthrop will close out the regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 5 when it travels to Radford, VA to take on Radford at 6 p.m.
“I was real pleased with the effort and work rate tonight against a very good Campbell team,” said head coach Rich Posipanko. “We’re just happy to pick up three points in the conference, especially on the road.”
The Eagles led 2-1 late in the game as Campbell pressed for the equalizer but freshman Charles Coulson spoiled any comeback with his fourth goal in the 81st minute. Senior Pol Sole and sophomore Max Hasenstab set up the goal as Hasenstab made the final pass to Coulson who beat the goalie to the lower left corner. It is the second time in four games that Coulson has provided an insurance goal in the final 10 minutes of a match.
In the 36th minute, Sole gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead as his corner kick delivery curved its way back toward goal and found its way into the top right corner of the frame for a goal. It was his seventh of the season.
Hasnestab scored his 8th goal of the year in the 42nd minute when he received a long ball from Magnus Thorsson. Hasenstab then proceeded to rip a shot from the top of the 18 into the top left corner as the Eagles led 2-0 at the half.
Campbell cut the lead in half in the 64th minute when Cameron Mulvey scored as he received a pass from Bradley Farias and found the back of the net.
Junior Fabian Broich made his first start in goal since Sept. 7 at UNC Wilmington when he left the game early with an injury that kept him out for weeks. He finished with six saves while his counterpart Matthew Mozynski finished with four. Broich is now 3-1 on the year.
Winthrop finished the game with a 13-10 edge in shots and had the advantage on corner kicks 4-3.
It is the first Winthrop victory over Campbell since 1987, ending a streak of 11 straight losses in the series.
