Winthrop Men Picked 6th; Women Are 7th In 2014 Big South Cross Country Preseason Polls

ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men’s cross country team has been picked to finish sixth while the women’s team is predicted to finish seventh in the annual Big South Conference men’s and women’s cross country preseason poll by the league’s head coaches.

Nine-time defending men’s champion Liberty edged out High Point for the top spot by just three points while women’s defending cross country champion Coastal Carolina has been voted to repeat.

Coastal Carolina claimed third in the men’s poll with 93 points to edge Campbell, which received the remaining first-place vote and 92 points for fourth-place., UNC Asheville garnered fifth-place with 70 points, followed by Winthrop (sixth, 64 points), Radford (seventh, 53 points) and Longwood (eighth, 51 points)., Gardner-Webb finished ninth in the voting with 31 points, while Charleston Southern was 10th with 22 points., Presbyterian College rounded out the poll in 11th-place with 17 points.

In the women’s poll, Liberty finished second with two first-place votes and 106 points. High Point was voted third with one first-place vote and 98 points., UNC Asheville claimed fourth-place with 88 points, followed by Campbell in fifth (78 points), Radford in sixth (62 points) and Winthrop in seventh (57 points). Charleston Southern was voted eighth with 39 points, just ahead of Longwood (ninth, 37 points). Gardner-Webb finished 10th (30 points) and Presbyterian College was 11th (14 points).

Winthrop’s 2014 men’s and women’s cross country season gets underway on Friday, August 29 at the Covered Bridge Open hosted in Boone, NC by Appalachian State. The annual Winthrop Invitational will be held on Saturday, September 20 in Rock Hill. ,The 2014 Big South Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championship is slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Gardner-Webb.
