Four Winthrop Pitchers Earn All-Star Selection In Baseball Summer Leagues
ROCK HILL, SC–Four Winthrop baseball pitchers have earned selection to summer league all-star teams.
The quartet includes right handers Joey Strain (Jr., Prince Frederick, MD), Brock Goodling (Jr., Mount Union, PA), Justin Pace (So., Gastonia, NC), and Austin Lawrence (Sr., Greer, SC).
Strain, who is playing for the Bourne Braves, will participate in the Cape Cod League All-Star game on Sunday evening at Doran Park in Bourne, MA. He is leading the Cape Cod League with a 0.65 earned run average and has a 1-0 record and six saves in his closer’s role. Strain has appeared in 12 games and has 12 strikeouts in 13.2 innings on the mound.
Goodling, a member of the Forest City (NC) Owls of the Coastal Plains League, pitched for the West team in the CPL All-Star game held on July 14 in Morehead City, NC. On the season, Goodling has a 2-3 record with seven saves in 18 appearances as a reliever and closer. He has compiled a 2.45 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 22 innings.
Both Pace and Lawrence are pitching for the Pineville Pioneers of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. Both players pitched one scoreless inning this past Saturday night in the SCBL All-Star game which was played at Sims Park in Gastonia, NC. Pace is 3-3 with a 1.64 ERA as a starter. In seven starts and 27.1 innings, he has struck out 20 batters. Lawrence is 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA and three saves. He has appeared in 10 games and has recorded 19 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.
