ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop golfer Bradley Kauffmann captured the 42nd South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association, held recently at the Seabrook Island Club in Seabrook Island, SC.
Kauffmann, a rising sophomore from Greer, SC, defeated stroke play qualifying medalist Brian Langley in impressive fashion by a 7 & 5 margin for his first CGA Championship. Kauffmann never lost a hole and won the 4th hole with a par then won five holes in a row starting on No. 7, He clinched the match with a conceded birdie on #13.
Kauffman said his strategy changed on the third hole of his stroke play qualifying round when he hit his tee shot with a driver in the water hazard. “I didn’t hit driver the rest of the week, just more worried about hitting fairways than hitting it a long way. It was all about the game plan.” Seabrook Island played at a par 72, 6,765 yards and was a very tight, hard and fast with winds of 15mph most of the round.
Winthrop golf coach Kevin Pendley said he is very excited for Kauffmann. “It was a great win and huge confidence builder for Bradley. He is a talented player who has always had the skill and he just needs to keep developing,” said his coach. “He overcame a difficult golf course and exhibited great patience which sometimes has not been his strength. He played really, really well and is a deserving champion.”
Kauffman’s win earned him an exemption into the 2014 Carolinas Amateur Championship that will be played July 10-13, 2014 at Greenville Country Club (Chanticleer Course) in Greenville, SC.
