The city of Rock Hill has made it official today that it is hosting the BMX World Championships at its Riverwalk track in July 2017.
The BMX track is still under construction, but is expected to be completed by August.
Mayor Doug Echols said Rock Hill has been preparing for this announcement for years.
“When you can have the kind of caliber event of a world championship come to your community, it takes a lot of time, effort and preparation,” Echols said.
The city estimates that about 33,000 BMX cyclists will be competing at the world championships.
Rock Hill Sports Commission Chairman John Gettys says 10,000 visitors are expected to spend as long as ten days here.
Gettys estimates the economic impact of the event at $13 million.
