ROCK HILL, SC—The Big South Conference announced its 2014 softball conference awards as Winthrop garnered seven honors highlighted by Freshman of the Year Maddie Antone.

Winthrop seniors McKenzi Corn and Alex White were each named All-Big South First Team while Antone was named to the second team. Corn, a 2014 Preseason Player of the Year runner-up, batted .401 and also led the team with 57 hits, 34 runs, and 17 walks. It was her second straight season being named to an All-Big South Conference Team. White, who made the move to first base this season after the previous three at third base, earned her first honor after batting .292 with 17 runs, 13 doubles, four home runs and 29 RBI.

Antone earned the top freshman honor after batting .374 with 20 runs, seven home runs and 21 RBI. Her .374 average is fifth in the league while she finished second in league games only with a .426 average. Antone was named to the second team as a designated player and was joined on the All-Freshmen team by teammate Megan Winningham, who finished with 20 RBI in league play. Winningham batted .294 with 18 runs, five home runs and 26 RBI on the year while bouncing around positions at second base, as the designated player and in the outfield.

Corn, who is the ninth different outfielder at Winthrop to earn all-conference honors, was also named to the Big South Conference All-Academic.

Antone is the first Eagle to win the Freshman of the Year award since Megan Evans in 2007 and is the fifth different player all-time at Winthrop. She has a chance to break the school record for batting average by a freshman, which is currently held by Leslie McAlister (1998) at .375. Antone is also the first freshman at Winthrop to make an all-conference team since Taylor Wright earned first team honors in her first season in 2009.

Winthrop will open up the Big South Conference Tournament this week against fourth-seeded Campbell on Thursday at noon on the campus of Coastal Carolina in Conway, SC.
