Winthrop Lacrosse Downs Coastal Carolina 14-8 Wednesday In Big South Quarterfinals

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team downed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 14-8 Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Big South Conference tournament at Eagle Field.

The Eagles (8-10) now advance to the Big South semi-finals and will play the winner of the contest between the top-seeded High Point Panthers and Presbyterian. The semi-final contest will be played at 4 p.m. Friday on the campus of High Point. Coastal Carolina closes its season with a 5-12 record.

Winthrop grabbed the first two goals of the game, both coming a man down after a yellow card less than two minutes in. Jenna Kasmarik scored the first on an assist from Hayley Krause while freshman Sydney Cope scored the second. Coastal then scored three of the next four to tie the game at 3-3 with 19:04 left in the half. Alicia Geiter had two while Sara Nolan grabbed the other.

The Eagles responded with back-to-back goals of their own, one each from Kasmarik and Krause. Danielle Ellis had the assist on each to put the Eagles up 5-3. Krause scored her second of the half with 13:27 on the clock which came in the middle of two Coastal goals from Geiter and Maggie Carr. Winthrop closed the last five minutes strong, tallying goals from Krause and Shannon Gallagher to take an 8-5 lead into the break.

Winthrop again got a strong start to the second half, netting the first two goals from Kasmarik and senior Mary Accomando. Accomando’s goal came on an assist from fellow senior Maddi Genovese who made a 75-yard run from the defensive third, into the attacking third and gave a quick feed to Accomando just in front of the goal mouth that had the Coastal defense frozen.

The Eagles’ defense came up strong in the second half as well limiting Coastal to only one goal through the first 23 minutes of the half which came from the stick of Lily Yednock.

Winthrop led 12-6 as the clock ticked under seven minutes to play. Coastal’s Yednock scored two goals within two minutes to cut the Winthrop lead to 12-8 with 5:09 to play. Those were the last two goals that the Chanticleers scored. The Eagles tacked on two more goals from Abigail Blevins and Krause for the victory.

Hayley Krause tallied a game-high five points on four goals and one assist. Jenna Kasmarik finished with four goals as well while Shannon Gallagher added three goals and one assist. Goalie Camille King picked up the victory, making seven saves while also forcing four turnovers and picking up five ground balls.

Coastal’s Alicia Geiter led the Chanticleers with four points on three goals and one assist. Lily Yednock also scored three goals in the loss. Sara Nolan dominated the circle, grabbing nine draw controls. Maria Platsidakis made her first start of the season in goal and made five saves.
