Women’s Golf Team Finishes 5th In Rain Delayed Big South Championship

NINETY SIX, SC–Campbell ran away with the Big South Conference women’s golf championship by shooting even par for the 54-hole event while Winthrop placed fifth out of nine schools on Tuesday at The Patriot Club.

While Campbell (864) was winning by 30 shots over second place Coastal Carolina (894), the Winthrop women finished fifth (936) just two shots behind fourth place Gardner-Webb (934).

The Camels jumped out to a 29-stroke lead after Sunday’s opening round and never looked back in cruising to the title. Campbell opened with a 10-under par 278, followed that with a 1-over 289 on Monday and closed out the tournament with a 297 on Tuesday. Three Campbell players finished with sub-par performances led by tournament medalist Louise Latorre at 3-under 213 (68-72-73).

Winthrop was led by junior Jennifer Dilger (Palmdale, CA) who tied for 13th after finishing at 231 (75-75-81). She was voted to the Big South All-Conference team and was also named to the All-Academic Team. Junior Vivi Nuorti (Helsinki, Finland), finished two shots behind Dilger and tied for 18th place at 233 (78-76-79). Senior Meagan Wallace shot 234 (76-80-78) and finished 21st. Louise Jeppesen (Vken, Sweden), who was voted to the All-Freshman Team, tied for 33rd place after shooting 239 (81-81-77). Rounding out the Winthrop performances was sophomore Anna Jenkins (Rock Hill, SC) who shot 250 (85-85-80) and finished 42nd.
