Winthrop Women Dominate Hammer Throw At 2014 Carolinas Cup

ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop dominated the hammer throw as it claimed the top three places during the 2014 Carolinas Cup which attracted eight schools to the Irwin Belk Track Complex on Thursday.

The team titles were won by Appalachian State while the Winthrop women finished second and the men were fifth.

Freshman throws sensation Marthaline Cooper added another hammer throw meet title to her list of wins this spring as she took first place with a throw of 180 feet-7 inches (55.05m). Finishing second was Shaniqua Hunter with personal best toss of 176-08 (53.84m) and third was Cynthia Gordon at 163-02 (49.74m). Cooper and Hunter now rank one-two on the Winthrop record list. Cooper ranks 21st in the East Region and 55th o n the national ranking while Hunter has moved up to 33rd in the East descending order list and is 96th nationally.

The Winthrop women also had four more first place finishes. Junior Shalace Rose won the 400 meter dash in a time of 56.46 seconds while senior Sharrone Honor continued her strong performances in the 100 meter hurdles with a clocking of 14.05 seconds. In the triple jump, freshman Carmon Rollizo had the top distance with a leap of 37-05.25 (11.41m). Alesha Love won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:01.54.

The ladies also turned in strong efforts in the 200 meter dash with Rose and Honor finishing second and third with times of 24.97 and 25.37 seconds, respectively. Senior Lisa Nichols claimed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.27. Freshman Lily Garrecht had third place in the pole vault with a height of 10-11.75 (3.35m).

The Eagle men claimed first place in three events. Sophomore Colby Coulter captured the 3,000 meters as he finished in a time of 8:4.30. In the discus junior Matt Thompson threw the dish a distance of 154-08 (47.14m) to win his event while freshman Mike Hadjak took first in the javelin with a throw of 164-06 (50.15m).
