Winthrop Lacrosse Falls 13-9 To Longwood Sunday
ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop lacrosse team fell 13-9 at home to the Longwood Lancers Sunday afternoon in a Big South Conference contest.
Longwood (5-7, 2-0) came out and grabbed the first two goals of the game in the opening 6:02 of the contest. Winthrop pulled one back from the stick of Danielle Ellis on an assist by Logan McCarthy with 22:43 left in the half.
Shannon Gallagher notched her first goal of the game with 18:49 on the clock after Longwood made it 3-1 two minutes earlier. Longwood then scored four straight goals to go up 7-2 with just over 10 minutes left in the half.
The Eagles (3-9, 0-2) got back within 7-3 on a tally by Gallagher with just over four minutes left. In the final minute of the half, goalie Camille King forced a turnover and Winthrop had a chance to get within three, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Lancers. Longwood drove down the field and with two seconds left got a free-position attempt on a shooting space violation by the Eagles. Longwood capitalized as the horn sounded and took an 8-3 lead into the half.
Longwood came out and grabbed the first goal of the second half 6:06 into the period. Less than a minute later the Eagles responded on an unassisted tally from Abigail Blevins.
Hayley Krause pulled the Eagles within 9-5 less than two minutes later on an assist from Jenna Kasmarik. The Eagles could not, however, get any closer than four over the remainder of the game as the two teams traded the next eight goals as the Lancers grabbed the 13-9 victory.
Shannon Gallagher finished with three goals while Jenna Kasmarik tallied two goals and one assist. Alyssa Blevins led the team with three ground balls and Hayley Krause finished with five draw controls. Camille King finished with two saves.
Winthrop will return to conference play on Friday when the Eagles travel to Campbell for a 3 p.m. contest against the Camels.
