Winthrop Gives Strong Showing In Men’s And Women’s Discus On Third Day Of Big South Track & Field Championships

ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop junior Matt Thompson and freshman Gabriella Boatwright highlighted the final day of the 2014 Big South Conference Track and Field Championships as both athletes claimed second place finishes in the men’s and women’s competition to earn All-Big South honors.

The meet was scheduled to conclude on Saturday afternoon, but due to torrential rain throughout the night and day, the event will conclude on Monday with the completion of the women’s pole vault, the complete men’s pole vault and the long jump finals.

After 20 scored events. Coastal Carolina leads the women’s standings, while Liberty holds first place in the men’s standings. The Winthrop women are sxith while the men are in tenth place.

Thompson (Fort Mill, SC) had a throw of 47.76 meters to fall about one-half of a meter behind first place finisher David Scouten of Liberty. On the women’s side, Boatwright (Johnsonville, SC) threw the dish 40.41 meters.

The complete list of award winners will be announced by the Big South Conference next Thursday.
