ROCK HILL, SC- After an explosive start, the Winthrop baseball team used a three run fifth inning to beat Davidson 8-4 on Tuesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles are now 22-26 on the year while the Wildcats fall to 25-13.
Travis Shelley picked up his third win of the season, giving up two runs on three after coming in to relieve starter Matt Crohan. Davidson had five pitchers make appearances with Westin Whitmire taking the loss, allowing two runs on no hits.
The Eagles started off the game strong, scoring two runs in the first inning on a two RBI double by Brad Kaczka but Davidson would tie the game in the third inning.
Michael Patrick led off the fifth inning with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Kyle Edwards reached on a throwing error that advanced Patrick to third. Daniels then popped up to the second baseman but Patrick scored and Edwards advanced to second on another throwing error. Edwards then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Cody Dolan hit an RBI single to bring him home. Dolan stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a single by John Menken to make the score 5-2.
Daniels scored one in the bottom of the seventh, before Chad Smith hammered a two run homer in the eighth inning. Davidson got two back in the top of the eighth inning but the Eagles came out with the 8-4 win.
The Eagles will take an eight day break for finals before traveling to North Carolina A&T next Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. game.
