South Carolina General Assembly Honors Winthrop Women’s Basketball Team

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop’s 2013-14 Big South Conference championship women’s basketball team was honored on Thursday by the South Carolina General Assembly for capturing its first conference title, making its first NCAA tournament appearance and becoming the first Big South member school from South Carolina to win the league championship.

State Senator Wes Hayes, one of four legislators who represent York County in the General Assembly, presented Head Coach Kevin Cook, his staff and members of the team with a South Carolina Senate Concurrent Resolution during a brief ceremony at the Winthrop Coliseum which included the presence of Winthrop President Jamie Comstock Williamson and Athletic Director Tom Hickman.

Hayes read the entire resolution to the group gathered and said, “Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring, that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Winthrop University women’s basketball team for capturing the 2014 Big South Women’s Championship title and honor the team’s exceptional players, coaches, and staff.”

The Winthrop women set a new school record for overall wins with 24 and a new record for most conference victories with 15.
