ROCK HILL, SC – Junior Jenna Kasmarik tied a season-high with six goals and sophomore Abigail Blevins tallied three goals and three assists Monday afternoon as the Eagles downed the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 16-10 in Big South action at Eagle Field.
With the victory, the Eagles improved to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the conference while Coastal fell to 4-11 overall and 2-4 in the Big South.
Winthrop came out strong, grabbing the first two goals in the opening three minutes, both from the stick of Kasmarik. Coastal pulled one goal back less than a minute later, before the Eagles went on a tear, scoring six unanswered goals to go up 8-1 with 12:45 remaining in the half.
After the Chanticleers scored to make the score 8-2, Winthrop got three unanswered, one each from Abigail Blevins, Sydney Cope and Danielle Ellis to increase the lead to 11-2. Coastal grabbed one more with less than a minute before half to make the score 11-3 at the break.
Kasmarik got the Eagles on the board to start the second half, less than four minutes in. Coastal quickly responded but back-to-back goals from Shannon Gallagher and Kasmarik put the Eagles up 14-4 with 15:53 left in the game.
Coastal was able to score three unanswered goals to get within 14-7 with 8:07 on the clock. Abigail Blevins scored her third of the game with 4:21 left and Kasmarik got her sixth with under a minute to play as the Eagles cruised to victory.
In addition to Kasmarik’s and Blevins’ six-point outings, Shannon Gallagher tallied five points on three goals and two assists. Danielle Ellis added two points on a goal and an assist. Three Eagles each totaled three draw controls, Gallagher led the team with five ground balls and Kasmarik forced three turnovers. Camille King picked up the victory, recording two saves.
Winthrop will continue its busy week on Friday when the Eagles head to Lynchburg, VA to take on the Liberty Flames at 6 p.m.
