Despite Tying Game in Ninth Inning, Baseball Falls 9-6

ROCK HILL, SC- Despite tying the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Winthrop baseball team dropped a 9-6 decision to Western Carolina on Tuesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles fall to 18-22 on the year as the Catamounts improve to 24-11 this season.

Both teams had a combined 12 pitchers make appearances with Winthrop’s Michael Green taking his first loss of the year, giving three runs on two hits in extra innings while the Catamount’s T.J. Fussell earned the win and holding the Eagles to just one hits in the last four innings.

Babe Thomas and John Menken led the Eagles with three hits each, and Brad Kaczka had three RBIs on the night, including a single in the bottom of the ninth to bring Menken home to tie it the game and send it into extra innings. Menken had singled and advanced to second on single by Chad Smith.

Western Carolina took the game in the 13th inning when three Catamount runners came home to make the final 9-6.

The Eagles travel to High Point for a three game weekend conference series. Game times are Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
