Cabela’s seeks incentives for I-77 site in York County

Cabela’s — the outdoor sporting goods retailer that will open next spring on the former site of the Plaza Fiesta mall in Fort Mill — is seeking a public handout in its efforts to expand operations in South Carolina.

The retailer plans to build a 100,000 square-foot store at the highly-visible site off Interstate 77 and Carowinds Boulevard.

York County Economic Development Director Mark Farris says the outdoor outfitter is seeking public assistance in infrastructure improvements of Carowinds Blvd. and Fiesta Blvd., the two roads leading into the site.

“If you think about the impact of a $20 millin-plus investment with 200 jobs…the Cabela’s operation certainly qualifies for some potential incentives,” Farris said. “Frankly, if you look at cost-benefit analysis, it would be worthy of receiving some incentives.”

But while the company is seeking incentives at the York County site, that’s not the case for the company’s future Greenville location.

“We don’t need incentives to make our model work,” Cabela’s chief executive Tommy Millner told the Greenville News.

Cabela’s plans to employ 225 workers at the I-77 site when opening next year.
